In Guløy, Flolid and the Gulating – In Search of the Truth about Norway’s Ancient Assembly Site, local historian Jan Kidøy presents the most comprehensive study so far of the landscape, sources, and traditions connected with the earliest Gulating.
Drawing on saga literature, historical research, archaeological observations, and local oral tradition, the book revisits a debate that has lasted for more than two hundred years: the search for the earliest meeting place of the Gulating assembly.
The study brings together history, folklore, and landscape to reconstruct the setting in which one of Norway’s oldest legal traditions took shape.
